"Ready Player One" -- Guest Book Review by Cameron Edwards

Ready Player One / Ernest Cline

 Cameron Edwards, Guest Reviewer

Ready Player One is a science fiction novel written by Ernest Cline. The story follows 18-year-old Wade Watts in the year 2044. The world’s oil supply has run out, and wars have erupted across the world. Poverty is at an all-time high, and many people live in stacks of RVs, mobile homes, and trailers. Most people attempt to escape this life through a virtual reality video game called the OASIS. Its creator, James Halliday, has been dead for five years ago as of the beginning of the book. Halliday’s will stated that whoever found three keys and three gates hidden inside the OASIS would receive his company, home, and 180 billion dollars. People all over the world called gunters have been searching for these keys with very little success, including Wade, his crush Art3mis, and friends Aech, Shaito, and Daito. The book tells the story of their quest to find the keys and gates before a company called IOI finds them and shuts down OASIS.

The book itself has tons of references to movies, books, games, and TV shows like “Doctor Who,”  “Back to the Future,”  The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, Pac-Man, and many more. Also in the book are clues to a real-life hunt created by Ernest, the prize being a DeLorean. If you like science fiction, a good book, or the chance to win a car, Ready Player One is, in my opinion, one of the best books I have read in the past two years.

Ready Player One is a must read for everyone.
